This is to apologise for the lack of ZFORUM for the last few months.
This is due partly to lack of messages, but also because RSRE have
updated their computer system and since they forgot to formally specify
it first are now having e-mail problems. :-) Ruaridh Macdonald's new
e-mail address is <MACDONALD@uk.mod.hermes> although the old address
will remain available for a while.

As a result of the above, this edition of ZFORUM is being issued from
Oxford. We hope that Ruaridh can resume his valuable role as ZFORUM
editor in the future. In any case, you can send items for ZFORUM to
<zforum@uk.ac.oxford.prg> and requests to join or leave ZFORUM or
changes of e-mail address to <zforum-request@uk.ac.oxford.prg> on
JANET.

Subject: news group discussion

God! this mailing list has gone dead recently. Has nobody had anything
contentious to say even about 00-55?

how about `00-55 is going to put back the widespread use of formal
methods by a decade'.

Anyway, I just though that you would all like to know that a discussion
has started on usenet about setting up a newsgroup to deal with issues
in formal specification generally.

I personally think that this would be an excellent idea, and would
provide a lot of cross fertilisation of ideas. Not to mention making
the ideas more widely known (after all if you are a subscriber to this
mailing list then you must have had active reason for it; people who do
not currently know cannot listen in passively; unlike on news), and the
larger (in the sense of the entire western world, and in the sense of
wider range of techniques instead of just `Z') community might generate
more debate.

So if you think this would be a good idea, you can have some influence
on the debate (which in practice boils down to `what will we call it?').

Calls for discussion are in the expected places; the discussion proper
is in `news.groups'.

Sean

Subject: Z bibliography

I will be updating the Z bibliography again this year, with a view to
handing out an updated version at the Z Users Meeting. Please send
possible entries to me, preferably via e-mail, so that we can make the
bibliography as complete and up to date as possible. Forthcoming
papers, books, etc., may be included if there is a definite publication
date. Please include as much information as possible (e.g., author(s),
title, journal, publisher, volume/number, pages, date, ISBN, price,
etc., as appropriate).

                            Wolfson College, Oxford
                          Thursday 14th December 1989

This year we have received a number of excellent technical papers, not all of
which can be presented at the user meeting. This special meeting has been
arranged to enable authors to present their papers in full, with adequate time
for discussion. The papers will be selected from those submitted (see previous
page). Those attending should have some knowledge of Z and its use in
development.

Registration fee: 30 pounds to include copies of papers presented, lunch and
refreshments.

                                    Agenda

               09.30 onwards Registration, coffee

               10.00 - 13.00 Morning session (break at 11.30)

13.00 - 14.15 Lunch provided in Wolfson College

The meeting is in the Haldane Room, Wolfson College, Linton Road, Oxford.
Linton Road is a turning off the Banbury Road, North Oxford, and Wolfson
College is at the end of the road.

                               Other information

Posters: You are invited to send (by 30th November if you wish them to be
bound with the presented papers) posters describing research related to the
use of Z. Posters should be A4 in size and provide a title, description, and
the name and address of the author.

Z Forum: For those with access to a computer network, newsletters about Z are
published regularly in the Z Forum. Details of this may be obtained from Mr.
Ruaridh Macdonald at RSRE, St Andrew's Road, Great Malvern, Worcs WR14 3PS.
Telephone: (0684) 892733 (e-mail: MACDONALD@uk.mod.hermes). He will probably
be present at the meeting and will be able to give you more information.

One of the valuable functions of the Z Forum is to compile details of all the
current papers published and unpublished which are available in Z at the
moment. At the meeting a shorter list of references will be handed out
containing the most useful references.

Travel Arrangements: Car Parking is notoriously difficult in Oxford. However,
for the Z Technical Meeting at Wolfson College, there is a car park. There is
also street parking close to the college at the end of Linton Road.

For the Z User Meeting in Rewley House, there is a multi-storey car park and a
Park-and-Ride scheme. A preferable alternative would be to travel by rail (BR
station is 10-15 minutes walk).

Accommodation: A limited number of rooms have been booked at Rewley House for
the Thursday night (14th December). These will only be held until 30th
November. Reservations should be made directly with Lorna Morrison at Rewley
House as soon as possible - Phone No. (0865) 270360.

Alternative accommodation booking service:
Oxford Information Centre, telephone (0865) 726871.
